چکیده

Quests are a fundamental storytelling mechanism used by computer role-playing games to engage players in the game’s narrative. Although role-playing games have evolved in many different ways in the last years, their basic narrative structure is still based on static plots manually created by game designers. In this paper, we present a method for the generation of dynamic quests based on hierarchical task decomposition and planning under nondeterminism. The proposed approach combines planning, execution, and monitoring to efficiently handle nondeterministic events and support quests with multiple endings that affect the game’s narrative and create interactive and dynamic story plots. These plots are directly or indirectly affected by player’s actions and decisions. Furthermore, this paper presents the concept of hierarchical quests. Author

Player Behavior Modeling for Interactive Storytelling in Games

Video games add new dimensions to traditional storytelling by allowing players to change narratives through their own actions. In modern Role-Playing Games (RPGs), this is usually done by adopting branching storylines based on key choices presented to players at certain points of the game. However, such branching points are usually presented through specific dialog choices or predetermined acti...

Memoisation in sentence generation with lexicalised grammars

This paper discusses a sentence generation system PROTECTOR which uses: (i) a non-hierarchical semantic representation which allows for flexible lexical choice and un~form treatment of different languages, (ii) a lexicalised D-Tree Grammar which is very similar to TreeAdjoining Grammar in spirit, and {iii) dynamic programming techniques to avoid doing redundant computations. We review the motiv...

Towards Procedural Quest Generation: A Structural Analysis of RPG Quests

An analysis of several role playing games indicates that player quests share common elements, and that these quests may be abstractly represented using a small expressive language. One benefit of this representation is that it can guide procedural content generation by allowing quests to be generated using this abstraction, and then later converting them into a concrete form within a game’s dom...

Towards a Procedurally Generated Experience: A Structural Analysis of Quests

In this paper, we present a quest structure, in the form of a grammar, obtained from an analysis of the main quests of a single player role playing game (RPG), namely “The Witcher 3 The Wild Hunt“. This grammar extends a previously presented analysis by other authors on MMORPG quests. This extended grammar is suitable for application in single player RPGs. The grammar allows the procedural gene...

Trajectory tracking of under-actuated nonlinear dynamic robots: Adaptive fuzzy hierarchical terminal sliding-mode control

In recent years, underactuated nonlinear dynamic systems trajectory tracking, such as space robots and manipulators with structural flexibility, has become a major field of interest due to the complexity and high computational load of these systems. Hierarchical sliding mode control has been investigated recently for these systems; however, the instability phenomena will possibly occur, especia...
